Your resilient baby

D.W. Winnicott, a paediatrician and child psychotherapist, created the term the ‘good-enough mother’.8 He reminds us that our children can manage our flaws and imperfections. That they are able to adapt to their situation, the parent–child relationship and any changes that we present to them – and that includes new ways of falling asleep. It doesn’t mean we are failing if we find the process difficult. Let’s not forget that you are probably tired and this makes it far harder to face a new challenge, whether that is changing how you do things or coping with your baby’s tears.

We can only do our level best to support our babies and children as they grow. Not all families are suited to sleep training, which is why it is so important to be kind to yourself in the process and be prepared to change things up if you need to.

There is a misunderstanding that all sleep training refers to the ‘cry it out’ method (which I don’t practise myself, although I will cover it later), but it is far more nuanced than this with many different options. Sometimes it may be something as simple as the introduction of a regular bedtime routine, if you haven’t got that in place already, or a tweak to naps, for example. It is important not to underestimate the power of a well-balanced, predictable day and evening routine. In the next chapter, I start by outlining several ways to set up things for a settled bedtime that don’t involve any particular sleep methods.

However, whether you can cope with some tears or prefer no tears at all, there are lots of ways you can work on sleep. I’ll go on to give you clear guidance on several sleep methods, so you can make an informed choice and work out which feel best for your family – don’t expect to know the answer to this before you start. It’s not always clear-cut. Sometimes we need to try things first to see how they go. As I have said many times, you can always change your mind.
